Actor launches social networking site for "grown-ups" to avoid friend request from mother
How far would you go to avoid receiving a "friend request" from one of your parents? For Tim Brennan, a 28 year-old actor and writer, his mother's growing interest in using a social networking site led him to suggest she start her own. "My mom has always been interested in computers and technology," said Brennan. "When she started talking about people her age using MySpace, I figured it was only a matter of time!" "In my defense," said Lenora Brennan, I never intended to use MySpace, but I do think that people over 40 are being left behind by this technology. Social networking sites are the golf courses and country clubs of the younger generation--a way to meet people and make important contacts. If people over 40 don't learn this technology, they'll be left behind."
Blinxi.com is a social networking website designed to appeal to users 40 years of age and older. The target market is the older adult who is interested in learning new technology and who needs a user-friendly site to help him/her enter this new world. This user has heard about Youtube.com and perhaps reads blogs online but hasn't attempted to start one yet.
Blinxi was designed to be friendly, intuitive, and easy to use. Tim Brennan recruited a high school friend, Spencer Moy, and together they researched all the popular social networking sites and implemented all of their best functions into Blinxi. The comprehensive HELP section begins with very basic instructions and teaches users how to post photos and embed photos and video in a very clear way. John and Lenora Brennan provided the financing and worked with the programmers to develop a site that was easy to use. Their daughter, Sarah, has extensive research skills and has applied them for Blinxi.com in compiling target demographic data.
"Blinxi is a family project," said Lenora Brennan, "and I've learned a lot from Tim, Spencer and Sarah about how internet sites work, and the technology needed to support the site. It's been an amazing opportunity, both because I've had a chance to work on a project with my family and a good friend, and because we are learning all sorts of new things. Technology develops in spirals. If you step off of the information highway, it becomes very hard to step back on to it. Blinxi will give adults who haven't grown up with social networking technology a chance to get back on the highway."
