April 9, 2007 (Press Release) --
As you well know as the Green spanner Mechanic I am greatly interested in tools.
In the mechanical trade tools come in all shapes and sizes with many being especially designed to do a specific job.
The Internet has spawned a hole new set of tools many of which are also designed for specific jobs and if we want to make a living online then some are essential and many are just variations of the right tools altered and marketed to extract dollars from the unwary.
Now just like working out in the offline world you come across many scum bags and mostly you can recognise them and avoid them. The Online world is a hole new ball game as there are millions of good people online it attracts more than it’s share of scumbags.
My story is I was not wary enough. I use paid to surf programs as a tool to get exposure for my sites. This requires that I have a method to fund these programs for which I have an Egold account. Recently after having put money into my Egold account I funded one paid to surf program and twenty minutes later went to Fund another.
Unbelievable! In that twenty minutes one of the above mentioned scum had logged into my account and cleaned it out. This required some deep breaths and some though before I was able to even think about doing any thing.
Sent an email to Egold to advise on what had happened.
The reply stated that as it had gone to an account there was nothing they could do about it. Which I pretty much had figured out any way. But they did have the IP address so if the amount had been more significant I could have hired some cyber detectives to try a track it.
They reply also told me that there where nine known key logger programs which they listed. Most interesting, here was me in my innocence thinking that my computer was safe behind a Zone Alarm fire wall, wrong. They said that one of their clients had found viruses when they ran a program call Kapersky.
So I find Kapersky , download the trial and do a complete scan. Well I am to embarrassed to tell you the exact figures of viruses and Trojans that it found but let me just say it was a lot.
Since I have had Kapersky running it has frequently warned me of bad email attachments, I never open attachments any way so I don’t know why people send them, as well as not nice sites encountered while surfing the Traffic exchanges.
So be very wary when you log onto your Egold or banking accounts and make sure that you are entering the right address and that the padlock is closed. Average workers like most of us can’t beat these scum but by taking sensible precautions we can make it as difficult as possible for them.
