April 10, 2007 (Press Release) --
MTV personality Jason Wahler hurled racial and homophobic invectives at a police officer when he was arrested over the weekend after punching a hotel security guard and passing out drunk in a hallway, a Seattle Police Department report said.
Wahler, 20, of MTV's ''The Hills'' and ''Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County,'' was arrested early Sunday for investigation of assault and criminal trespass. He posted bail and was released from the King County Jail nine hours later.
It was Wahler's third arrest since September, when he punched a city worker and tow-truck driver in Los Angeles. Last month, the judge in that case sentenced him to 60 days in jail -- a sentence he was to begin serving in May.
In the latest incident, Wahler ''repeatedly'' called Officer C. DePina, who is not black, a ''n-----'' and a ''f-----,'' DePina wrote in his report. ''Wahler stated he was rich and would have my ass. Wahler made vague threats to assault officers.''
'Just clicking along'?
Anniversaries are opportune times for taking stock, of course. While the Tribune's John von Rhein continues to champion CCM, some other critics say a revitalization is in order. Marc Geelhoed, classical and opera editor for TimeOut Chicago, is one of them.
"It's all very friendly and it's rarely ever very emotionally charged," Geelhoed says of CCM's performance dynamic. A concert featuring the work of former CSO composer-in-residence Augusta Read Thomas, he thinks, was a perfect example. "I liked the piece but it didn't really grab my attention. ... It was just very lackadaisical, just clicking along without a lot of excitement."
WFMT critic-at-large and frequent Sun-Times classical music scribe Andrew Patner has similar thoughts about the artistic health of CCM. He says they've "lost a certain edge" over the years. "As interpreters, they don't consistently make a mark."
