April 13, 2007 (Press Release) --
Nokia Corp. is investing in an electronic dictionary developed by a Danish college student to speed up text-messaging, the cell phone maker said.
The patented dictionary, developed by Morten Prochowsky of Technical University of Denmark, constantly attempts to guess the next letter users are keying, based on the letters they have already entered, The Copenhagen Post reported.
Nokia user experience Manager Niels Ebbe Jacobsen did not say how much money Nokia is investing in the technology.
Jacobsen said the Finnish company rarely invests in patents taken out by students.
The dictionary, which relies on probability calculations based on text messages already sent, can also be used with MP3 digital audio players, the Post said.
