April 14, 2007 (Press Release) --
Blossoms of Kimjongilia, a perennial flower belonging to the family of begonia, are in bloom by turns for more than 120 days, fascinating beholders.
The flower was developed by the Japanese horticulturist Kamo Mototeru after his more than 20-year-long painstaking research.
His long-cherished desire was to develop the most beautiful and rare flower and name it after a peerless great man for the purpose of handing it down to posterity.
With this desire, he was engrossed in the relevant research.
He traveled many countries including South American countries to get the necessary sort of flowers.
At last, he found a clue to cultivate a new sort. His research went smooth, and he was confident of success in the job. Now he had to think of a name to give to the new flower, the fruit of his 20-odd year-long hard efforts.
Out of his boundless worship and admiration for Kim Jong Il, he finally named his new flower Kimjongilia.
In February Juche 77 (1988), on the occasion of the leader’s birthday, he presented the full-blown flower to the leader.
Later, Kimjongilia rapidly spread across the world.
Kimjongilia demonstrated its position as a world famous flower by winning high appreciation at international flower shows.
The flower won the special prize and gold medal at the 12th International Flower Show held in Bratislava of former Czechoslovakia in May Juche 80 (1991), the top prize at the Flower Exposition in Jilin, China, in August 1997, the Grand Prize, the top prize, and diploma at the China 99 Kunming World Horticultural Exposition in May 1999. It also took the first place at the begonia show in California, the United States, in August 2004.
Especially it caused a great sensation by winning the gold award, the top prize, and diploma at the 2006 China Shenyang International Horticultural Exposition, too.
The head of the international jury of the International Horticultural Exposition said:
“There is no flower as charming as Kimilsungia and as wonderful and impressive as Kimjongilia even in the Netherlands claiming to be the kingdom of flowers in the world.
“Through this exposition that the DPRK dominated, the world has come to foresee the bright future of Korea led by Kim Jong Il and fully understand the Korean people’s national spirit and self-confidence.”
Meanwhile, the International Society for Horticultural Science registered Kimjongilia as a new variety of begonia.
As a result, Kimjongilia came to shine more brightly in the world of flowers and to be handed down to posterity as a treasure of mankind scientifically recognized by the world.
