April 15, 2007 (Press Release) --
Throughout his prison stint, Lohan has garnered attention for himself by attempting to contact his estranged daughter through the press. After his release, Lohan continued this embarrassing behavior as he rounded up news cameras to tape his first post-prison phone call to LiLo. (She didn't answer.)
As much as we may cringe to watch such horrible celebrity parenting, we can learn some valuable tips from these train wreck relationships. And, Michael, I hope you are taking notes!
1. You are not your child's best friend.
In other words, you shouldn't be holding your teenager's purse while they dance on the bar. You shouldn't be lighting your daughter's cigarette, like Melanie Griffith did in a recent photograph. There is nothing wrong with being fun and hip, but there is something wrong with being the enabling mom/dad. Even if your child is not underage, there is still something unsettling about grinding to Fergie with your offspring. Be your child's supporter, advisor and shoulder to lean on, not their drinking buddy.
2. You are not their warden.
Being a parent is a never-ending, 24-7 job. No matter how old your children get, you still want to hold onto them and protect them. However, at a certain point, you need to loosen the reins. Take, for example, Joe Simpson. He flaunted his daughter Jessica's virginity like it was his own badge of honor. It is one thing to encourage your daughter to make wise decisions, but it is another to make her decisions for her.
3. Always remember: Children follow your example, good or bad.
The apple does not fall far from the tree, even when it comes to celebrities. Michael Lohan struggled with alcohol/drug abuse for years and now LiLo has admitted to doing the same. In a recent Glamour interview, Drew Barrymore reveals she often went out to bars with her mother and her mother's friends, all so they could benefit from her "E.T." fame. Not surprisingly, Drew later entered rehab at the ripe old age of 13. Children who watch their parents participate in destructive behavior, such as drinking or abuse, often follow this cycle later in life.
There are some good parenting tips we can learn from stars. Madonna's daughter, Lourdes, gets penalized if she doesn't clean her room. Madonna won't let her have clean clothes when there are dirty clothes on her floor. And, Ivanka Trump, who could certainly live an easy life, works hard for her money. She even has to pay Donald a mortgage on the house she purchased from him.
Being a good parent means walking a fine line. You want to be your child's advocate, but not their friend. You should discipline them, but not control them.
