Leaders from Public and Private Sectors Address Strategies to Strengthen Pipeline of Talent to Keep America Competitive on a Global Basis
For_Immediate_Release:

April 18, 2007 (Press Release) -- CUPERTINO, Calif. – April 17, 2007 – Symantec (Nasdaq: SYMC) hosted a forum today in Cupertino, Calif., to examine strategies and programs needed to increase the development of talent needed to strengthen innovation in America and maintain its global competitiveness. The forum was held as part of the National Governors Association’s (NGA) Innovation America initiative.

The event was chaired by NGA Chair Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano and Symantec Chairman and CEO John W. Thompson, member of the NGA’s Innovation America Task Force. Participants included Dr. Robert Dynes, president of the University of California collegiate system; Dr. Martha J. Kanter, chancellor, Foothill-DeAnza Community College; Sean Walsh, special advisor to California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger; Dennis Cima, vice president for Education and Policy, Silicon Valley Leadership Group; Sunne McPeak, CEO, California Emerging Technology Fund; Cathleen Barton, manager of U.S. Education, Intel Corp; and Tom Malloy, senior vice president and chief software architect, Advanced Technology Labs of Adobe. Symantec hosted the forum on behalf of fellow Innovation America Task Force members eBay and Intel.

Findings from the forum will be used as a basis for a report containing specific recommendations that will be delivered by Gov. Napolitano on behalf of the Innovation America Task Force to governors across the nation to build their states’ innovative capacity.

“Without proper education, U.S. workers will find it impossible to compete in the technology-intensive 21st century economy,” said Napolitano. “Our discussions here today have gathered insights from business, government and education experts. We’ve examined what works, what doesn’t, and how we should proceed to safeguard American technological leadership and economic prosperity in years to come.”

“Skilled workers are the lifeblood of countless companies across America,” said Thompson. “Symantec and its Silicon Valley colleagues recognize the crucial role we play in ensuring that American workers are among the best-trained in the world. Making sure our workforce gets the education and training it needs is critical to our global competitiveness and is an effort that must be pursued cooperatively between the public and private sectors.”

“Kudos to the National Governors Association and its Silicon Valley partners for focusing on an issue that matters greatly to all Americans: the link between education and global economic competitiveness,” said Dynes. “For example, the University of California’s Science and Math Initiative is striving to enhance the quality of our future workforce by increasing the number of qualified K – 12 science and math teachers. This program was made possible by unprecedented collaboration across government, industry and academia. It is generating new ‘best practices’ in teacher education and it shows clear potential to be scaled up to national proportions.”

The 17-member Innovation America Task Force was established in December 2006 by the National Governors Association to bring together a bipartisan group of governors and members of the academic and business communities to oversee efforts to strengthen the competitive position of the United States in the global economy by improving the nation’s capacity to innovate. In addition to Gov. Napolitano, the task force is also chaired by NGA Vice Chair Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty. Other task force governors include: Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebilius; Missouri Gov. Matt Blunt; Pennsylvania Gov. Edward G. Rendell; and Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, Jr.

Business and academic leaders also include: Dr. Craig R. Barrett, chairman of the board, Intel Corp.; Dr. G. Wayne Clough, president, Georgia Institute of Technology; Dr. Michael M. Crow, president Arizona State University; Jamie Dimon, CEO, JPMorgan Chase & Co.; Charles O. Holliday, Jr., chairman and CEO, DuPont; Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson, president, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute; Dr. Judith A Ramaley, president, Winon State University; Dr. Mary S. Spangler, chancellor, Oakland Community College; Kevin Turner, COO, Microsoft Corp.; and Meg Whitman, president and CEO, eBay Inc.
