April 18, 2007 (Press Release) --
On LIVESTRONG Day, the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) will lead a group of 200 advocates to Capitol Hill to demand that legislators invest in resources, treatment and services for everyone battling cancer. To complement Washington, D.C., activities, LIVESTRONG Day community events will be held in cities across the country to raise awareness and show support for cancer survivors and their loved ones. LIVESTRONG Day delegates from every state will arrive in Washington, D.C., on Monday, May 14.
On Wednesday, May 16, they will meet with their states representative and senators to share their cancer story and urge Congress to support legislation that benefits the cancer community.
Katie Brown, of North Richland Hills, Texas, was selected out of hundreds of applicants to be a delegate from Texas to go to Washington, D.C., with the Lance Armstrong Foundation.
After her father’s lung cancer diagnosis, Katie and her husband Rick Brown founded and created the Lung Cancer Support Community, (www.lchelp.org) to support and provide information to those affected by lung cancer. There is also an active message board and live chats with almost 3500 registered members, card and buddy circles and a 24 hour telephone line.
Upon learning that lung cancer is the deadliest cancer and the least funded of all cancers, Katie became active in the cancer community as an advocate and activist for patients and for lung cancer research funding.
The Lung Cancer Support Community and Katie joined forces with the LUNGevity Foundation, the only organization dedicated exclusively to funding lung cancer research.
Thru the Lance Armstrong Foundation, Katie provides materials and information for her website members. The LAF promotes all cancer organizations to work together to make cancer a national priority and provides tools and resources to make that possible.
Katie has been a Lance Armstrong delegate since October of 2006.
The first ever DFW Lung Cancer Run/Walk will be held on Nov. 17, 2007. For more information, please visit www.dfwwalk.com or contact Katie at katieb@lchelp.org , (817) 501-9313.
