New OmniPage for Apeos Combines Touch Screen Simplicity with the World’s Best Selling OCR and Searchable PDF Technology to Help Organizations Win the Battle Against Paper
For_Immediate_Release:

April 18, 2007 (Press Release) -- AIIMexpo 2007, BOSTON – April 18, 2006 – Nuance Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: NUAN), a leading provider of speech and imaging solutions, today announced that it has teamed with Fuji Xerox to develop OmniPage for Apeos, a new server product that adds touch-screen scanning, distribution and document conversion capabilities to the Fuji Xerox ApeosPort range of network multifunction devices (MFDs). The product will be sold by Fuji Xerox and its network of resellers and dealers throughout the Asia Pacific region.

OmniPage for Apeos puts powerful optical character recognition (OCR) capabilities at the fingertips of everyone within an organization – using a touch-screen on the ApeosPort MFD. Users simply touch on the task they need – turn paper into electronic text, create a searchable PDF archive, scan a document to send to email recipients or networked folders – and instantly their paper documents are converted into highly efficient electronic information.

“Fuji Xerox solutions deliver compelling productivity benefits because they distill complexity down to a simple touch,” said Roger Pearce, marketing manager Fuji Xerox Australia. “Our partnership with Nuance provides us with the expertise needed to make scanning and OCR as easy as making a copy, and provides our customers with the world’s most accurate document conversion technology available.”

OmniPage for Apeos is a Web-based implementation of OmniPage from Nuance, the world’s best selling and most accurate OCR application. The OmniPage for Apeos server module provides document conversion, image processing, image preview, and routing capabilities to Fuji Xerox’s Image Gateway for Apeos server, which processes scanning jobs from the web-enabled ApeosPort multifunction devices.

Benefits of OmniPage for Apeos:

Document conversion that supports plain text, searchable PDF, image-only PDF, and JPEG output
Image processing that provides auto-orient and auto-deskew functions
Image preview on the ApeosPort user interface panel, including thumbnail images for each page stored or scanned PDF files to a specified location on the Image Gateway for Apeos server
Routing capability to write the output file to a shared folder on a local server or remote server.

In addition to converting to traditional file formats such as JPEG and PDF, OmniPage for Apeos can also convert scanned documents to text searchable PDF files, which makes it simple to find documents on a network server or folder, or on a user’s PC. OmniPage for Apeos also supports English, Korean, simplified Chinese or traditional Chinese characters, and can quickly and easily transform hard copy documents composed in these languages to pure text or text searchable PDF files at the touch of a button.

OmniPage technology from Nuance is used by many of the commercial vendors that implement imaging and OCR capabilities, including Autodesk Raster Design, EMC Captiva, CardScan, FileNET Capture, Fuji Xerox CentreWare Flow Services, Kofax Ascent Capture, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Office and SharePoint, Xerox DocuShare and more. It is also the technology used within the world’s largest Web book scanning and search projects, and the only OCR indexing technology integrated with desktop search products, including Google Desktop Search. And OmniPage OCR from Nuance is used by millions everyday within the world’s most accurate and popular desktop scanning, OCR and document conversion applications – ScanSoft® PaperPort®, OmniPage® and PDF Converter Professional.

“It is clear that document capture and conversion have become mainstream, front-office functions within organizations of all sizes,” said Robert Weideman, senior vice president, Productivity Applications Division, Nuance. “In developing OmniPage for Apeos with Fuji Xerox we are able to put powerful scanning, conversion, PDF and editing tools right at the device, enabling people within an organization to use, find and share information more quickly and easily than ever before.”
