April 19, 2007 (Press Release) --
So you're a fan of Erik Larson's The Devil in the White City -- about the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893 and one of America's first serial killers -- and you want to know more.
You're in luck. The second season of the Chicago Architecture Foundation's popular Devil in the White City Tour, featuring a 3½-hour bus journey to the locations featured in the book, kicks off Friday.
"CAF tours tend to attract a lot of visitors from Chicago, but this one attracts Chicago residents more than anything," docent Chris Multhauf says. "What's great is that people aren't as interested in the gruesome aspects of the story as they are in learning what Chicago was like then."
Participants visit Washington and Jackson parks, Prairie Avenue and the former furnished-room and red-light districts on the Southeast Side.
"A lot of Chicagoans have just not spent any meaningful time on the South Side," Multhauf says, "so the tour is like another world to them."
The program starts with a 10:30 a.m. slide presentation at the foundation, 224 S. Michigan. For reservations ($40-$55), call (312) 922-3432.
