"It's a hell of a long way from Falmouth & Gilder," commented Leo, as we wandered along Eglinton Avenue in East Toronto.

And yes, indeed, the Skyline Trail in the Rocky Mountain Range in western Alberta, Canada, is a very long way from here...in a myriad of different ways.

A few years back, I found myself leading a group of teens on the toughest journey of their lives as we traversed the 72 kilometre Skyline Trail...at its highest point, one can see hundreds of miles of snow capped peaks, stone grey rock faces and ribbons of marble blue waterfalls cascading through velvet green valleys fueling breathtaking aqua blue lakes.

During that trek, I learned a great deal about humans and mountains.

The mountains are fine teachers. They challenge without condemnation or judgement. They stand in neutrality as a part of this world which I have some difficulty comprehending. They remind me that the saying 'getting back to nature' is a complete fallacy.

What we did in the mountains was 'get back to our own human ground of being.'

It was a journey of self discovery and endurance. It was an exercise in socialization and isolation.

It was the creation of a mini-society or tribe complete with a moral value system that ensured the group's survival.

The snow covered peaks that cut through the clouds and resisted the howling winds are mystical and absolutely common at the same time. And if man is indeed a part of nature as I believe him to be, man is equally mystical and absolutely common also.

The mountains mirrored life and love, death and hate.

But they only mirrored our own reflections. Without me and without the group, there would have been nothing human to reflect. Without the mountain, there would have been nothing in which humans could review their reflections.

This then, is the Tao...the Way of the Skyline Trail.

This is the foundation for morality...the essence of humanity...the often incomprehensible way of nature...the spirit of HOPE."
