April 21, 2007 (Press Release) --
"Alaska/Yukon/Arctic Light--Gifts of the Wild,” a new photo book by Kathleen M.K. Menke/Crystal Images of Haines, Alaska, will hit the streets of Alaska, April 25th. The book highlights wildlife in Denali National Park, the midnight sun in Arctic National wildlife refuge, and includes many images from Southeast Alaska and the Yukon. The theme is light in the far north and all that flows from it—from spring break-up, to greening grasses, emerging leaves and flower blooms, and the wild spirits nurtured by the light’s energy--including wolves, Dall sheep, bears, moose, caribou, snowshoe hares, porcupine, beaver, arctic ground squirrels, hoary marmots, humpback whales, and birds.
The book contains dramatic half-page and full-page images from Alaska, the Yukon, Denali National Park, Kluane World Heritage Site, Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge, the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, and parts of British Columbia. The book is primarily a celebration of spring, but is rounded out with images from all seasons. Included also are glaciers, the northern lights, wildflowers of the arctic tundra, the midnight sun in the Arctic during summer solstice, and the light of people who live close to the land.
Menke’s images have an emotional appeal. One can get to know the personalities of individual animals and their families through the close-up and personal glimpses of wildlife in this book. "These vivid images eloquently reflect the beauty of this luminous land. Kathleen's lens is a reverent portal," says Alaskan wildlife biologist and artist, Tim Shields.
Kathleen Marie Kennell Menke has been professionally photographing subjects that capture her interest and her heart for over twenty years. Her work has been published in numerous regional, national, and international publications.
Alaska/Yukon/Arctic Light is her second book. Her photo book, "Haines for All Seasons--Northern Exposures from Alaska Reflecting Our Bond to the Land and Each Other", featuring rural life, cultural tradition, wildlife, and scenery, published in 2005, has been a local and regional best-seller.
"Alaska/Yukon/Arctic Light", printed by InterPress Ltd., is 8.5" x 10", 80 pages with 175 full-color original photographs by Kathleen Menke, with quality printing on fine art paper, pages stitched, with a laminated perfect bound cover.
The books are available at book stores and gift shops and directly from the photographer at the book’s website: www.akmk.com/ayal
