Dear Mr. Silverstein,
The “product line” of the NoGraf Network is substantially different than your 600 retail stores. In one word, it is “information.” As a 501(C)3, Nograf links the world’s graffiti-busters, enabling them to share questions and best practices. Our website, which has had millions of visitors, provides one-stop-shop information about graffiti and methods to combat it. Despite our differing product lines, we believe that we ultimately serve the same customers: the collective members of our nation’s communities. I am writing to bring to your attention an area wherein Spencer’s Gifts, perhaps unknowingly, is not serving those communities well.
At one of our website pages (“Painting the Image”) we provide information, provided by website visitors, about societal forces which influence the perception of graffiti by members of our communities. Citizens who have not been victimized by graffiti and who are unaware of the estimated $15 to $18 billion per year cost of graffiti vandalism can easily be led to believe that graffiti is as harmless as any other youthful fad; Spencer’s may be playing a role in the latter.
Amidst many important societal issues, ours is certainly a narrow focus, and we recognize that. Despite that narrow focus, we would not promote an act of vandalism in order to help boost sales. It appears that Spencer’s Gift’s is trying to connect with a group of criminal vandals in order to attract that sub-culture to your stores. There are a growing number of communities that are tired of corporations using graffiti in their marketing. These groups are starting to band together in an effort to put a stop to these corporations from promoting a criminal act that ends up damaging their communities. As law-abiding citizens, we ask that you cease using graffiti in your marking and storefronts. Our members, and affiliates, only ask that you look closer at the communities that you serve, and see if what you are doing has a negative impact upon them.
Please give your graffiti marketing, additional thought.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Randy Campbell
