April 27, 2007 (Press Release) --
Protective Packaging with forecasts to 2010 & 2015
US demand to rise 4+% yearly to 2010
US protective packaging demand is expected to grow 4.4 percent annually to $3.8 billion in 2010, stimulated by expanding Internet and mail order catalog sales and the specialized requirements of packaging applications in the electronics, medical and other industries. Inflatable bags, insulated shipping containers and bubble packaging will present the best opportunities. Slowest growth is expected for loose-fill and paperboard protectors in light of competition from more cost effective materials.
Foamed plastic to see strong growth
Foamed plastic protective packaging will exhibit above-average growth based on its light weight and superb cushioning properties. Molded foam will remain the dominant foam type due to its ability to be custom molded to conform to sensitive equipment such as computers, consumer electronics and instrumentation, providing enhanced protective capabilities. Advances for foamed polyolefin (i.e., polyethylene and polypropylene) rolls will be due to their excellent scratch protection and cushioning capabilities for products such as electronics and furniture. Foamed-inplace polyurethane will post a slower rate of growth due to its higher cost and more specialized applications compared to its molded foamed plastic counterparts.
Cushioned types offer flexibility, other cost benefits
Inflatable bag growth will result from advantages over loose-fill, bubble packaging and molded foams in providing cushioning, blocking/bracing or void-fill functions in the packaging of fragile items. Bubble packaging opportunities will reflect advantages such as a competitive cost structure, flexibility of use and cleanliness compared to alternative materials. Growth in insulated shipping containers will result from an aging populace and subsequent needs for the packaging of cold- and heatsensitive products such as pharmaceuticals, vaccines and diagnostic laboratory products. Protective mailer demand will be spurred by the needs for economical, lightweight, pre-constructed protective packaging for the shipping of various objects.
