April 27, 2007 (Press Release) --
World Elevators with forecasts to 2009 & 2014
Global elevator demand to grow 7% annually through 2009
The worldwide market for elevator and escalator products and services will expand by seven percent per annum through 2009 and approach $60 billion. Gains will be supported by a firming of the global nonresidential building construction sector as economic expansion and new business formations bring vacancy rates down in key segments such as offices. This will help to offset some slowing in residential building construction, which is also an important indicator of elevator demand in Europe
and Asia.
Innovations, building codes to help fuel gains
Also fueling growth will be technological innovations in latter-generation systems -- including microprocessor-based controls and sensors, remote monitoring, automated traffic flow control and enhanced safety features -- which will result in improved performance and generate further demand at both the new installations and modernization/ upgrade ends of the business. In addition, retrofits to comply with changing building codes and federal mandates will rejuvenate the upgrade/ modernization services market in North America and Western Europe.
Passenger/freight elevator sales to reach 375,000 units in 2009
In the key passenger and freight elevator market, unit sales worldwide will increase 6.5 percent per year to 375 thousand units. In value terms, demand will rise over seven percent annually, surpassing $11 billion dollars. However, price inflation will remain subdued, reflecting increasingly stiff competition in the machine-roomless segment and greater reliance on manufacturing in low cost venues such as China and Eastern Europe.
China, developing regions to register fastest growth in elevator demand
The most rapid growth in elevator demand is anticipated in the developing regions of the world -- Latin America, Eastern
Europe, Asia, Africa and the Mideast. China, which has already emerged as the largest global elevator market in unit terms, will continue to log explosive gains, with the development of a lucrative service aftermarket bolstering the robust OEM business.
