April 27, 2007 (Press Release) --
The long expected EyeToy for the PS3 is now officially baptized the PlayStation Eye and promises unprecedented cam-enhanced gameplay.
PlayStation Eye (weird name isn’t it?...) is the spiritual and physical heir of the PS2’s EyeToy, which, as most of you already know, is a digital camera device, similar to a webcam, for the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable.
PlayStation Eye however, promises enhanced features compared to its predecessor, including a more sophisticated microphone (4 channel audio, 48kHz) with the ability to reduce background noise and focus on spoken word for smoother, more accurate speech recognition, and a re-engineered lens with higher resolution input (640*480 at 60fps) to better perform in low-light conditions. It’s a bit disappointing that PS Eye features a VGA resolution (some fans were expecting an HD IP webcam), but the two zoom levels (for close-up and full body options), and the capture rate that reaches up to 120fps (for improved tracking, responsiveness and smoothness) are probably a good compensation.
The all new EyeToy can make sense of environments to add costumes and backgrounds, as well as overlaying interactive items into scenes. A previous patent registered by Sony shows the clever camera is capable of working out movement forwards and back.
The PlayStation Eye will be bundled with the free editing software EyeCreate, which will allow users to save, edit, and add visual effects to photos, video and audio clips.
In addition, EyeCreate also enables user to capture videos and audio clips directly to the PS3's hard disk drive and access a range of different capturing modes, including slow motion and time-lapse.
Sony Computer Entertainment America researcher and developer, Richard Marks--who devised the original idea for the EyeToy—said that, "With the release of PlayStation Eye we will be able to dramatically enhance the consumer's PS3 experience. Beyond audio/video chat and the ability to save videos to your PS3 hard drive, PlayStation Eye opens up a whole new world of entertainment options and adds a new dimension to games across multiple genres."
David Reeves, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe added: "PlayStation Eye is a great example of how we have moved forward so significantly with our technology. PlayStation Eye has four times the resolution, twice the framerate and double the sensitivity of its predecessor EyeToy USB Camera. With the technology that we now have at our disposal we will be able to dramatically improve the communications experience enjoyed on PS3."
PlayStation Eye, an accessory for voice, video chat and online gaming on the PlayStation Network, will be released this summer in the US and Europe at a yet unspecified price.
One of the first titles to make use of the PS Eye’s enhanced features is CCG The Eye Of Judgment, which will be produced by Hasbro's Wizards Of The Coast in collaboration with Sony.
And yes, we know PlayStation 3 is a console, not a toy...
