April 28, 2007 (Press Release) --
Champagne - Management briefing
Champagne shipments in 2002 reached their highest point since 1999 and third highest level ever at 287.65m bottles, a 9.5% increase on 2001, according to the latest figures released last month by the Comité Interprofessionnel du Vin de Champagne (CIVC). With stock levels in most important export markets, notably the UK and USA, almost non-existent at the start of 2002 and good re-ordering widely reported in January 2003, shipments are thought to be very close to sales for the first time since 1998.
Importantly stock inventories left over from the record 221.86m bottles shipped in 1999 in the run-up to the millennium celebrations had finally been sold through by the end of 2001. The year therefore began well, with a strong surge in shipments in the first quarter (export shipments were up 26.7% to the end of April 2002). But while this was expected, the fact that demand and shipments continued to be buoyant throughout 2002 has surprised the Champenois, given the general worldwide economic gloom and the poor state of the stock market.
