May 1, 2007 (Press Release) --
PlayStation Eye promises enhanced features compared to its predecessor, including a more sophisticated microphone (4 channel audio, 48kHz) with the ability to reduce background noise and focus on spoken word for smoother, more accurate speech recognition, and a re-engineered lens with higher resolution input (640*480 at 60fps) to better perform in low-light conditions. A bit disappointing is the fact that PS Eye features a VGA resolution (some fans were expecting an HD IP webcam), but the two zoom levels (for close-up and full body options), and the capture rate that reaches up to 120fps (for improved tracking, responsiveness and smoothness) are probably a good compensation.
The all new EyeToy can make sense of environments to add costumes and backgrounds, as well as overlaying interactive items into scenes. A previous patent registered by Sony shows the clever camera is capable of working out movement forwards and back.
The PlayStation Eye will be bundled with the free editing software EyeCreate, which will allow users to save, edit, and add visual effects to photos, video and audio clips.
In addition, EyeCreate also enables user to capture videos and audio clips directly to the PS3's hard disk drive and access a range of different capturing modes, including slow motion and time-lapse.
The EyeToy is also compatible with PS3 (with an inferior picture quality though) but the reverse situation is not applicable: Eye is not compatible with PS2.
According to Sony’s officials, there is an increasing number of games readied for PS3’s Eye, but the confirmed titles are Eye of Judgement, Ember, Skyblue and Aqua Vita.
Apparently, Eye’s improved capacities to record audio and PS3’s abilities to process complex input signals will make gaming more fun: “PS Eye’s high-quality mic array allows PS3 to analyze the audio input and separate human voices from other sounds, such as fans, traffic sounds, laundry, vacuums, etc. This makes your voice clearer on the other side during chat, and makes it easier for games with speech recognition to understand what you are saying.”
Bad news though for those who wanted to upload movies taken with Eye: all the movies and sounds recorded with it will be saved in a format that works only with EyeCreate (the software bundled with Eye). So “these files cannot be used on the XMB and therefore not exported.”
However using it as a web-cam is definitely better since Eye runs typically at 60 fps, more than double the number of frames most mainstream web-cams today can produce. The Eye can even run at 120fps for extreme high-speed tracking applications.
