Breast Specific Gamma Imaging - "The next step" after a qustionable mammogram. Now in Orlando.
BSGI is a strong diagnostic tool especially for those patients who have dense breast tissue, suspicious areas on a mammogram, lumps, implants, or previous breast surgeries.

Mammography remains a woman's critical first screening measure, but it can only indicste anatomical structure. BSGI images matabolic activity, aiding in the differentiation of benign and malignant masses. The metabolic imaging of nuclear medicine is less effected by variations in tissue density, thereby offering a vital adjunct to mammography and ultrasound.
Breast specific gamma imaging is an adjunct diagnostic procedure when post-mammogram evaluation is indicated.
Intetrating BSGI as a "next step measure: into the screning protocol allows for effective management of suspicious and difficult to interpret cases. For the cases where mammography is weak in detecting lesions, BSGI is strong, especially when patients present with: dense breast tissue, multiple suspicious lesions, palpable lesions not detected with mammography or ultrasound, Hormone Replacement Therapy, post surgical or post therapeutic masses and implants.
Mammography has good sensitivity but poor specificity as witnessed by the high false positive rate of biopsy. BSGI has the complementary characteristic to x-ray, with demonstrated high specificity. Pairing these two imaging modalities puts powerful diagnostic capabilities in the hands of the practicioner.
BSGI evolved from a related nuclear medicine imaging procedure of the breast, scintimammography, and both are based on the enhanced uptake of sestamibi tumors within the breast. Scintimammography has shown promise as a diagnostic tool for breast cancer detection, but the limitations of the procedure as performed with standard gamma cameras did not allow for the reliable detection of sub centimeter lesions or direct correlations to mammograms. Advances in the technology of gamma detectors has led to the progression of a functional breast imaging procedure that is now achieved with anatomic specific detectors, and in this case - optimized for high resolution breast imaging. The Dilon 6800 delivers all the imaging requirements for succesful BSGI.
Breast Health Institute is currently the only center in the Orlando area that can schedule this procedure on site. With a radiologist on staff, the patient will receive same day results versus the lengthy wait for scheduling and results with other lesion evaluation techniques.
"We have had patients come from Miami, Palm Beach, Europe and Maryland for this procedure" states Ralph J. Tullo, MD, Radiologist and owner of Breast Health Institute. "Being able to give our patients peace of mind, and same day results is very rewarding"
