May 9, 2007 (Press Release) --
The Center for Understanding Islam strongly and unequivocally condemns the alleged terrorists’ plans to kill American soldiers at Fort Dix, New Jersey. Such evil acts are clearly forbidden in Islam and cannot be viewed as being jihad or in the “service of God” in any sense.
CUI calls on the Muslim leaders in each community to take a strong stand against extremism wherever it may raise its ugly head. We need to recognize that individuals in our midst who might be planning violent acts of terror must know that the community stands against them. Our silence would be interpreted by these individuals as tacit approval and even support for their evil design. We must not allow ignorant extremists among us to invoke Islam in vain and must do everything to take our beautiful faith back from such elements.
The local Imams, in particular, have an obligation to speak against hate and guide their followers away from violence against innocent people anywhere in the world. We must work together as Americans to prevent further acts of terror. CUI urges all Imams to use their next Friday Khutah (sermon) to condemn terrorism and de-legitimize the baseless claims of terrorists when they invoke the name of Islam to justify their evil crimes against innocents.
CUI plans to redouble its intra-faith efforts to engage with local leaders to undertake a campaign against extremism in the community. We urge all mosques and Islamic centers to hold open discussions on how to confront the “jihadis” and challenge their extremist ideology. CUI is prepared to facilitate such discussions.
We also urge all mosques and Islamic schools to engage with the FBI and with their local law enforcement agencies and to extend our full cooperation with their efforts to protect all Americans within the principles of the Constitution of the United States.
We applaud the FBI and local law enforcement in preventing a tragedy. The video store employee who alerted the authorities is a true citizen and deserves our thanks. However, we urge the media to avoid blaming the faith of Islam for the alleged evil designs of these misguided individuals who profess to be Muslims.
