FALLS CHURCH, Virginia – AdoptALibrary.org, the smash hit literacy advocacy website, was featured in the April 2007 edition “Special Green Issue” of Town & Country, a monthly magazine from The Hearst Corporation.
AdoptALibrary.org was also honored in April when April 23rd was named “Adopt A Library Day” by proclamation of the governors of Virginia and Nebraska.
AdoptALibrary.org is designed to encourage and facilitate donations to libraries in prisons, Native American reservations, and schools around the world. AdoptALibrary.org does not ask for or accept donations – all donations offered go directly to libraries and schools, or organizations which aid them.
The Town & Country special section, written by Francine Maroukian, was called “Going, going, GREEN”.
Town & Country (circulation 464,415) is the oldest continually published general interest magazine in the United States.
Besides Town & Country, Woman’s World, and Quick & Simple magazine, hundreds of newspapers throughout the US, from an editorial in Bigfork, Montana to “Hints from Heloise”, have featured AdoptALibrary.org, which has had over 250,000 visitors who have donated many thousands of books (and not a few dollars!).
AdoptALibrary.org is the brainchild of musician Lynn Gaubatz, considered to be one of classical music’s most brilliant soloists. Named “One of America's Ten Most Outstanding Young Working Women” by GLAMOUR Magazine, Lynn has wowed audiences on four continents – North and South America, Europe and Africa – including virtuoso solo performances in Vienna, Salzburg, New York, Boston, Chicago, Seville, Málaga, Caracas, and Washington.
Says Lynn, “This Town & Country feature is really exciting! Each time AdoptALibrary.org is mentioned in the press, thousands and thousands of books are donated to schools and libraries by generous visitors. And there is SUCH a variety of donors - from environmentalists recycling their books to new hands to parents teaching their children to reach out and help other kids for the first time.”
Besides her international career as a soloist and chamber musician, Lynn is an avid literacy activist who performs benefit concerts in the US and Europe. On her three benefit “Concerts for India” in Austria, Lynn performed the world premières of two of the five works composed especially for her by composer Fritz Berens, an Austrian composer who fled the Nazis in 1939, and the world première of a work by Danish composer Ivar Danielsen.
An innovator in both music and literacy activism, Lynn ran a competition through AdoptALibrary.org to find the most clever and eco-friendly uses for old National Geographic magazines, with the prize awarded by the National Geographic Society.
She also researches, performs, and lectures on music banned and destroyed during the Nazi regime to bring to light the forgotten music, and credits libraries with preserving much of the music and literature that would otherwise be lost.
