May 25, 2007 (Press Release) --
Team Friends of Heroes (FOH), formerly Friends of Allie, raised $159,000 to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in 2006 through the Society’s local Light The Night® Walks. This makes the team the largest national Friends and Family Light The Night team in the Society's history for the third year. In honor of raising this significant amount of money, the team has been rewarded with a research grant bestowed by the Society, and denoted in honor of the team, its affiliates, and especially its honored heroes. FOH has selected to be associated with Joseph Wiemels, Ph.D., University of California, San Francisco, a grantee for his research in the area of childhood leukemia.
In addition, in 2007, the team is changing its name from “Friends of Allie” to “Friends of Heroes” to better identify the group and align it with its mission, which is to put a face on childhood cancer. The team originally was created in 2004 to honor Allie Scott, an 8-month-old baby who passed away from acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in September 2004. The team is comprised of volunteers, mostly families, throughout the US and Canada whose mission is:
-To raise money toward pediatric blood cancer research and patient services through Light The Night walks.
-To make a positive difference in the lives of families affected by pediatric cancer.
-To invoke awareness in our local communities of the need for cancer research.
-To build an international network of individuals and teams who share our passion and goal to raise money for an awareness of pediatric blood cancer.
The team’s overall goal for 2007 is to raise $160,000 to bring its team grand total to one million dollars raised in just over 3 years.
About Friends of Heroes (FOH)
Friends of Heroes, formerly Friends of Allie, is the first and largest national Friends and Family Team for Light The Night Walk. Motivated by the plight of Allie Scott (www.scotthousehold.com) and other children battling blood cancers like her, a grassroots movement emerged shortly after Allie’s passing, resulting in the formation of FOH and its unprecedented fundraising efforts for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. FOH enlarged its scope to include affiliate teams—both corporate and Friends and Family teams—who share their passion for finding a cure for pediatric blood cancers and making a difference in the lives of families stricken by pediatric blood cancer. Their tagline is “Putting a Face on Childhood Cancer.”
