May 26, 2007 (Press Release) --
May 26, 2007 -- The evidence is in.
The new, immersive exhibit, "CSI: The Experience," inspired by the award-winning CBS' TV show, "CSI," opening this weekend at the Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago was created by Bob Weis Design Island Associates, a media and design group specializing in entertainment enterprises. President Bob Weis is a former Senior Vice President with Walt Disney Imagineering.
The exhibit will be in Chicago through September, then will tour science centers across the U.S. for the next several years.
The exhibit provides visitors with three mock crime scenes and the tools and clues to crack the cases. "Crime Scene Investigators" will collect, analyze and test evidence, check DNA, examine blood spatter patterns, and perform ballistic identification.
The museum project was launched when Weis, and co-developer Cynthia Scrima, took the idea to film and television producer, Jerry Bruckheimer, CBS, and to “CSI” creator, Anthony E. Zuiker. Weis and Scrima knew that Zuiker was interested in the educational potential of his franchise, and pitched the idea that a “CSI” touring show could be a magnet for young people to learn science.
”Design Island’s team has really shown how a partnership of the entertainment world with educators can bring about a project that is a breakthrough for museums, ” said Van Romans, President of the Ft. Worth Museum of Science and History, the developer of the exhibit.
This week, actor William Petersen who plays Gil Grissom, co-star Marg Helgenberger who portrays Catherine Willows, joined Chicago dignitaries and the team of Bob Weis Design Island Associates at an opening party at MSI kicking off the 6000 square foot exhibit.
Petersen said the designers “have done a phenomenal job” of creating the “CSI” environment. He said the exhibit has taken advantage of the fact that “CSI” has done a lot to “turn young people on to science.”
“CSI” associate producer, Corinne Marrinan, provided the Design Island team with unprecedented access to “CSI” producers, cast, story development, and art direction. Scrima worked with Marrinan to get the best possible cast involvement without disrupting the day to day television show production.
“CSI: The Experience,” is produced by the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History, through a grant from the National Science Foundation, and the Science Museum Exhibit Collaborative.
The exhibit’s environment inspired by the show was created by Design Island art directors Scott Chase, Rich Swim, and Shim Yokoyama. The multi-media elements were written by Mellissa Berry, and produced by Design Island’s Tim Steinouer working with D7 Inc. Luna Red provided music and sound design. Special effects, including simulated autopsy footage, were produced at Design Island by Charlie Deaux and Tim Steinouer. Graphic design was performed by Jen Bressler of Hunt Design. Seruto and Company served as exhibit project managers.
