May 26, 2007 (Press Release) --
AST Physiotherapy & Rehab Clinic, one of Ireland’s leading service providers of a dedicated, broad selection of physiotherapy & rehabilitation services was officially launched tonight at a special ceremony in the company’s new premise in the old Verome Dockyard in Rushbrooke. Established early 2006 the clinic offers treatment in the following areas: Brain Injury, Neurology, Orthopedics, Spinal Injuries, Sports Physiotherapy and Stroke.
The launch was attended by Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Micheál Martin TD, Minister for Trade and Commerce Michael Ahern TD, David Stanton TD, Cllr. Noirín Doyle, Mayor of Cobh, President of Cobh and Harbour Chamber of Commerce, John Mansworth, Cllr. John Mulvihill, Cllr. Daniel Crowley, Cllr. Patrick Whitty, Cllr.Stella Meade, representatives from Europafachschule Fresenius (Germany) & M&I Fachklinik fuer Rehabilitation (Germany), a host of local businesses and, importantly, patients with their families.
Highlighted at the official opening, by patients and their families, was the current outcry all over Ireland regarding the terrible lack of support from Government and the Health Service Executive (HSE) on funding and assistance for individuals that have suffered stroke, spinal chord injuries, brain injuries etc and who are in need of physiotherapy and rehabilitation. There are long waiting lists for people to receive physio on the national health and by the time those individuals receive the treatment, more damage may have occurred, thus resulting in further suffering which can lead to depression, alienation and fear over how to cope - both mentally and financially.
In addition, families are finding it increasingly frustrating to manage with the lack of resources within the HSE when it comes to more complex cases. Unfortunately there appears to be a lack of knowledge, experience and understanding over various types of treatment methods. Due to this obstacle individuals are not being able to avail of the essential treatment that they require. Coupled with the issue over Medical Cardholders unable to avail of private physiotherapy services, the future is looking increasingly bleak for those in need of vital treatments supplied by Allied Health Disciplines e.g. physiotherapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy etc.
Speaking at the official opening Susanne Tanzer, owner of AST Physiotherapy & Rehab Clinic, stated “At our clinic we place great importance on providing the kind of treatments that allow our patients plenty of opportunity for rehabilitation and development in a homely environment. Between our high standard of equipment, extremely experienced team and empathetic approach we work tirelessly with our patients to overcome the challenges of their conditions.
There is a shortage of community rehabilitation facilities, especially for those under 65 years in Ireland. Therefore due to the shortage of services, there are serious problems accessing rehabilitation services
