PRESS RELEASE
SUNLAND PARK GRASSROOTS ENVIRONMENTAL GROUP
May 29, 2007
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Members of the Sunland Park Grassroots Environmental Group will march from Sunland Park to the International Monument No. 1 to participate in the meeting of the city councils of Sunland Park, El Paso and Juarez at 10:00 a.m. Thursday morning May 31, 2006. The joint city council meeting will address three resolutions against the reopening of the ASARCO smelter.
The Group wants to focus attention on the fact that at least 25% of ASARCO’s contamination is deposited on Sunland Park. ASARCO’s contaminants then drain into the Rio Grande four miles upstream from El Paso’s Canal Street water treatment plant. Almost all of El Paso’s water comes from the Canal Street water treatment plant this time of year.
The march will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the intersection of McNutt and Brickland Road in Sunland Park, N.M. and proceed down Brickland Road to International Boundary No. 1. Members of the public are invited to participate.
The Sunland Park Grassroots Environmental Group is a group of adults and children from Sunland Park, El Paso and Juarez who meet every Wednesday night at the San Martin de Porras Catholic Church, 1885 McNutt, Sunland Park, N.M. to address environmental problems that affect the Paso del Norte Region. Members of the public are welcome.
