The fight is never over. Although it is clear that women have come a long way since 1600, efforts to return women to a time when the unborn fetus ruled are constant.
The Boundaries of Her Body is a project of passion on the part of Rowland; her parents were not allowed to be legally married in most states when she was born in 1963. Her mother was what they call African American now, but she was “colored” or “Negroid” back then. Her father was then and is still “white.” Debran and her siblings were called “half-breeds” growing up. Rowland's passion is justice, especially where it involves fairness for women and minorities.
Rowland meticulously researched thousands of original documents over a 5 year period and finished The Boundaries of Her Body in 7 years with more than 4,000 footnotes. Rowland charts the progress of women in America from the early 1600s-when European women arrived in relatively large numbers-to modern issues through such areas as the workplace and medicine. It is a book that highlights and contrasts today's important issues with those of a time more than 200 years ago.

About Debran Rowland:
Debran Rowland is an attorney and writer, who earned her law degree at Loyola University of Chicago School of Law. In addition to a J.D., Ms. Rowland is a graduate of Carleton College. Ms. Rowland has written for The Korea Times, The New Pittsburgh Courier, Pittsburgh Press, the Chicago Tribune and The Commercial Appeal. Writing awards include Best News Feature, Chicago Association of Black Journalists-1991 and the Robert L. Vann award for Best Print News Series-1988. Ms. Rowland's legal articles have appeared in AMERICAN LAW REPORTS (5TH Series); Loyola University School of Law Public Interest Law Reporter, and the Illinois Bar Examiner. She lives in Chicago with her husband.
