In the face of the immense popularity of video games, more traditional games (board and card based games) are making a comeback. I find this incredibly exciting. There are so many great educational games being developed now. A lot of creativity is being put into developing wonderful games; it's not just Monopoly, Clue, and Risk anymore. There are so many great games out there! What I find frustrating is that these new games are not being carried by the big stores and are very difficult to find. It’s why we have opened our online educational game store “www.ImagineAndLearn.ca”, the first Canadian online store dedicated to educational games.
The adrenalin-pumping realism and danger in many modern video games concerns many parents, educators, psychologists, and doctors as many avid video game players exhibit classical addiction symptoms. In my physics and math classes, I remember quite a few students who couldn’t concentrate in class because they were tired from having stayed up too late playing video games. These were intelligent and ambitious young people who really wanted to succeed and do well in school, but were going nowhere because of their video game addiction.
Now I am not saying that video games are all bad. The discerning parent can choose amongst many creative and educational video games for their children, but no matter how good the game is, time spent playing video games should be limited. Video game playing misses out on the social interaction and emotional intelligence that is developed with face to face game playing. Kids need and want to spend time with their parents; it’s wonderful when groups of kids and adults can have fun playing together.
