What's Hoppin' Readies for Fall 2007 Publication
WILLIMANTIC-- On the heels of a successful inaugural issue, What's Hoppin' is now in the process of completing its first full-length issue, which will be ready for the return of Eastern students to campus in the Fall of 2007. The magazine aims to unite Willimantic and Eastern students, with the hopes of aiding the renaissance of Thread City by increasing student patronage of local businesses and involvement in local organizations. The magazine highlights Windham County's many businesses and civic groups, provides recreational ideas for students and serves as a friendly introduction to the area and college life.
"We are very pleased with our first issue," said Operations Manager Kenny Bjork. "Although we are proud of what we accomplished, there is a lot of information and businesses we wanted to showcase in our first issue but were unable to. With the second issue, we are working hard to ensure we are able to highlight as many businesses and organizations as we can," said Bjork.
"In addition to improved content, one of the biggest things we want to ad to What's Hoppin' is color pages," said Andres Hidalgo, publisher. "We were forced to publish the inaugural issue in black and white. Now that we have gotten our feet wet in the publishing industry, we can offer our readers and advertisers the attractiveness of full-color pages," he said. The second issue will feature expanded content about the area, helpful information about college life, travel tips for Eastern students and much more. The magazine will continue to feature wholly original writing and artwork.
Since the inception of What's Hoppin', the magazine and website was featured in the Hartford Courant in the January 29 article "Happening Town" by Brittany Oat. Bjork and Hidalgo were also welcomed to the cable access television show "Windham Works" by hosts Dawn Niles and xx. Windham Works is a by-monthly community access television show that focuses on issues facing Windham County.
What's Hoppin' provides a unique way for local businesses to introduce their company and products to Eastern students. 3,000 copies of the inaugural issue of What's Hoppin' were printed in February of 2007 and distributed free of charge to all ECSU on-campus mailboxes. What's Hoppin' was started by two Eastern graduates who settled in town and observed an opportunity for area businesses to increase the business they do with Eastern students. What's Hoppin' management includes Ken Bjork, Andres Hidalgo and Kevin Marshal. Ken, a business major, has five years of experience managing and operating a business. Andres has experience writing and designing and Kevin has extensive experience as a sales representative.
