June 7, 2007 (Press Release) -- A United States lawyer based from Atlanta flew from Europe and back to the country while he is infected with tuberculosis, which has some strains of drug-resistance. According to him, his condition is not too dangerous that would threaten the lives of the people he flew with in the plane. He and his family stressed that he would not have been allowed to fly, much less travel, if he thought that his condition is grave and contagious.

Los Angeles, California, June 4, 2007 – Andrew Speaker, the Atlanta lawyer flew to Europe for his wedding and set off a wave of international panic attack on health consciousness when his health condition was found out.

However, Speaker’s parents and in-laws defended his actions through TV interviews on ABC’s program “Good Morning America.” They fervently denied the fact that their son has committed reckless actions. His mother, Cheryl Speaker even vehemently asserted that they are not people who commit reckless behavior.

Furthermore, his mother ascertained that had he been found to be unfit or contagious, then he would not have gone. Speaker’s father, Ted Speaker said that he had a tape from a meeting with a doctor by his son wherein the doctor said approximately three times confirming the non-contagious status of Speaker, though he had been advised to avoid flying.

It was only in Europe when Speaker and his family found out that aside from TB, he also have XDR, an exceedingly non-resistant strain. He was advised against boarding another flight from Europe to U.S. but he did not heed the warnings and flew back to the country for treatments.

When Speaker’s father, who is also a lawyer, was asked if they are worried of being served with a possible lawsuit over the actions of their son, he seemed unworried reiterating that they have no fault regarding the matter.

Presently, Speaker who is 31 years old is having his treatments at a hospital in Denver. So far, results of Speaker’s test noticed that there is a low risk of spreading infections.
