June 14, 2007 (Press Release) --
Miami, Florida A major media event and press conference is being held on Saturday June 16th at the Holocaust Memorial at 1933-1945 Meridian Avenue in Miami. The press conference will begin at 10:00 am and end (tentatively) at 12:00 pm.
The primary reason for the conference is to draw greater attention to Miamis policy of housing registered sex offenders under bridges due to severe, legislatively-mandated residency restrictions on former offenders. These restrictions are part of a growing number of disturbing, counterproductive, and unconstitutional mechanisms that elected officials have devised and implemented upon registered sex offenders mechanisms that have been systematically denounced by numerous public safety experts both worldwide and across the U.S.
The press conference also seeks to raise awareness about the collateral damage of these laws that is suffered by family members and loved ones of these former offenders a tragedy which has been overlooked for far too long.
FIVE KEYNOTE SPEAKERS ARE SCHEDULED TO SPEAK AT THE EVENT:
TERRY BROWN Registered sex offender from Leawood, Kansas; currently registered in Florida while visiting. Founder of the Hope4Tomorrow Foundation (www.hope4tomorrow.us).
JANE DOE Family member of registered sex offender; activist for civil rights; practicing RN in state of Florida.
CHERYL GRIFFITHS Advocate for truth and mother of a registered sex offender.
MS. BARBARA H. SPRAGG Community activist and mother of a registered sex offender.
THOMAS HENRY TOM MADISON Registered sex offender from Portland, Oregon; currently registered in Florida while visiting. Founder of SOCLEAR Media Corp., Inc. (www.soclear.org).
Reporters, family members, human rights activists, child advocates, and ex-offenders have been encouraged and invited to attend. Personal invitations were also extended to child protection advocates who have played a crucial role in the enactment of many of these laws: John Walsh, Mark Lunsford, Patty Wetterling, and Maureen Kanka.
The Julia Tuttle Causeway in Miami, Florida is currently home to at least six registered sex offenders. This particular causeway is just one of several bridges nationwide where former offenders are being forced to live. The organizers of the event have accumulated a wealth of information to provide to the media and general public that will shed light on many of the controversial issues, myths, and facts surrounding registered sex offenders. They will also provide ideas on how we can better use law enforcement resources and taxpayer dollars when dealing with registered sex offenders for optimal public safety and sex crime prevention.
Press kits are available and will be disseminated to those attending the press conference. For more information abou
