So you have the perfect blog on the perfect topic … now all you need is people to read your fabulous blog – but how do you go about getting your blog in front of as many “eyes” as possible?

There are in fact numerous ways to market your blog - so let’s get started with some of the blog marketing basics … shall we?

First and foremost, you should write excellent content on a consistent basis. If the blog is not updated on a consistent basis, you will lose readership … guaranteed.

Along similar lines, you should ensure that your blog looks as professional as possible. For instance, you should have a unique domain name for the blog and make sure that the design of your blog looks professional and worthy of a reader’s precious time.

Let’s Get Serious: A Checklist for The Ages

1. You should submit your blog to the larger blog directories so that readers can easily find your unique blog. You should also make sure that when you update your blog that it automatically pings the major blog search engines such as Technorati.com. Linking out to other relevant popular blogs is another great idea.

2. Another excellent way to promote blogs is through online networking. As an example, you can participate in online forums on a topic that would be of interest to the individuals who may be interested in your blog subject matter. Of course, at the end of each post, you would have a link back to your blog in your signature. This method also builds trust with individuals as they see you as “person” and an “expert” through your posts and not just another one of those impersonal websites.

3. Along similar lines, you should post on other blogs and answer when comments are made on your blog. Another great way to gain “expert” status is by answering questions on such forums such as Yahoo! Answers.

4. Joining social networking sites is also an excellent idea. You can promote your blog to both old and new contacts in a more personal way with this type of forum. Some examples of excellent social networking sites to join include LinkedIn, FaceBook, and MySpace. Joining a “blog carnival” can also provide you with additional traffic to your blog.

5. Are you more traditional? Then you should definitely consider marketing your blog via the good ol’ standby … namely through a press release. You can, for instance, submit a press release to PRWeb.com or distribute a press release to local media outlets. This method of promotion is particularly effective if your blog is showcasing new or unique newsworthy content.

6. Writing articles for other ezines and submitting articles to free article banks is also a great inexpensive way to gain much wanted traffic and inbound links to your blog.

7. Looking for more unique ways to market that precious blog of yours? Consider offering “free stuff” such as an informative ebook with links to your blog. Another great traffic generator is to have a contest on your blog. After all, who can resist free stuff AND contests?

Well, there you go! While these ideas may just scratch the surface as far as marketing is concerned, these tips will undoubtedly help you to generate that traffic that you desperately need.
