July 1, 2007 (Press Release) --
On the morning of December 16, 1960, at 10:33 e.s.t. a collision between Trans World Airlines flight 266, a Constellation, and United Airlines Flight 826, a DC-8 Occurred near Miller Army Air Field, in Staten Island. Both aircraft were under Instrument Flight Rules as required, yet something terribly went wrong.
Shortly before the collision, at 1030:07, New York Control Center, cleared United 826 to “Descent to and maintain 5,000 feet” This was acknowledge and 826 reported leaving 14,000 feet, for five. At approximately 1033:01 the flight reported passing 6,000 feet.
At approximately 1033:28 (timed from Idlewild Approach Control tapes) Flight 826 called:
“ Idlewild Approach United 826 approaching Preston at 5,000 feet”
This was the last known transmission from United 826. Subsequent attempts to contact 826 were unsuccessful. At the time United 826 advised it was approaching Preston, it had in fact gone on by this clearance limit several seconds before and was several miles past the point at which it should have turned into the holding pattern.
At almost the same time, at 10:29 LaGuardia Approach Control cleared TWA 266 to descend to 6,000 feet. At 1032:20, TWA 266 advised 6,000 feet. At 1032:47
LaGuardia Approach Control advised TWA 266 “Traffic at 2:30, six miles northeast bound.” At 1032:51, TWA 266, acknowledge.
At 1033:26 LaGuardia Approach Control again advised TWA 266
“Roger, there appears to be jet traffic off your right, now at 3 o’clock at one mile, northeast bound.”
Following this transmission at 1033:33, a noise similar to that cause by an open mike was heard. Communications with TWA 266 were lost.
Over forty-six years have passed, since that horrific event occurred yet many questions have gone unanswered.
“Sterling Place “ written by Ray Garcia, tells a compelling story from family members who love ones perished on that cold and gray December morning, in 1960. As a teen, and living in New York, Mr. Garcia was an eyewitness to this horrific event when United 826 came crashing down from the murky skies into Park Place, and Seventh Ave. a quiet community in the Park Slope Section of Brooklyn. The event that unfolded that Friday morning are told by this author in graphic details, as it can only be told. His four-year investigation into the probable cause, and countless hours reviewing Government transcripts, uncovers a possible cover-up behind the accident. Questions that have been intentionally ignored, buried and forgotten are now revealed.
