New York, NY June 27, 2007- New York artist, John D’Agostino’s large scale photographs are showcased in two New York galleries this summer. The Pyrotechnic Insanitarium is a place of frightful grandeur. Of haunting beauty, stagecraft, and… nightmare. In the deceptive luminosity, all its lies are beautiful.
“Dragonfly” was selected as Curator’s Choice at VIRIDIAN GALLERY’s 18th Annual Juried Exhibition. Charlotta Kotik, Curator and Chair of Contemporary Art for the Brooklyn Museum is the curator of the exhibition. Viridian Gallery is located in the Chelsea Arts District in NYC. The exhibition runs from July 9 – 27, 2007 with the Reception on Thursday, July 12th from 6-8pm.
“Insatiable Destruction” is part of The Great Awakening Exhibition at Rhonda Schaller Studio, also in Chelsea, from July 14 – August 4, 2007, with the reception on July 19th from 6-8pm.
“Flash Gordon” is a finalist in an all-media, international competition entitled Reflections, at the ARTROM Gallery in Rome Italy.
D’Agostino’s calls his photography series The Pyrotechnic Insanitarium, the temple of illusion: terrible, beautiful and delightful. Light and fire, embryonic with possibilities both glorious, and ominous. In the deceptive luminosity, all its lies are beautiful. Although photography is his medium, John thinks like a painter – as an artist first, a photographer second.
John creates bold, haunting images of people and places out of the familiar. He approaches his subject matter with decisive composition, electric color, and a keen eye for the dramatic. Shooting is instinctual, with attraction only to the fundamentals of color, light and contrast. The creation of the work in postproduction is on an epic scale, with detailed and careful manipulation to create the inexpressible.
