July 12, 2007 (Press Release) --
The Alumni of Essex Catholic High School (ECHS) are planning the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the founding of their high school. Dubbed the “Golden Jubilee,” the black-tie dinner dance will take place on Saturday, September 22, 2007, at the original school building at 300 Broadway in Newark.
“What’s special about the Golden Jubilee is that this will be the first time in decades that alumni from Essex Catholic High School will be able to return to the original school building in Newark,” says Albert “Bert” Tobia, overall chairman of the Golden Jubilee and 1963 graduate of ECHS. “In 1981, the Archdiocese of Newark moved the school to East Orange, and eventually closed it completely in 1993,” explains Tobia. Despite the closing, the ECHS alumni have remained a strong group, getting together for annual dinners and golf outings, and supporting a foundation whose charter is to provide scholarships for inner city students pursuing a Catholic education.
After speaking with the property’s current owner, New Vista, and current tenant, Broadway House for Continuing Care, Tobia got the green light to celebrate the Golden Jubilee there. “The lobby, now being used by Broadway House, is exactly as I remember it,” says Art Martin, 1966 ECHS graduate and member of the Event Committee for the Golden Jubilee. Martin continues: “With minor changes made to the ballroom by New Vista, when I walked in, I felt as if I were 18 again, attending my senior prom.” 300 Broadway in Newark was originally built to be the headquarters of Mutual Benefit Life Insurance in 1927.
Reservations are being accepted; formal invitations will be mailed in July. For more information, go to www.essexcatholichighschool.com. The Golden Jubilee is being produced by Gala Ideas, LLC (www.galaideas.com), a full-service event planning firm based in West Orange, New Jersey.
