July 16, 2007 (Press Release) --
GIDG is an international network of highly skilled and experienced professionals
uniquely committed to the economic and social development of emerging and frontier
regions of the world, specifically Africa. Our collective mission is to promote trade,
foreign direct investment, sustained economic growth and the overall enhancement of
health and education standards in African countries. GIDG is a parent company
comprised of businesses and non-profit organizations that facilitate participation in
wealth accumulation for continental Africans and US investors through global trade and
investment. Our businesses include the following: Athletes and Artist for Africa, Butta,
Diabetic Amputation Prevention Foundation, FAME, GIDG Consulting, Made In Africa,
Sankofa Investment Management Group, and Sankofa Mineral and Natural Resources
Group.
The annual meeting, also known as “the AGOA Forum,” is an outgrowth of the
landmark African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) and brings together ministeriallevel
government officials from the United States and the 39 sub-Saharan African
countries eligible for AGOA trade benefits, as well as representatives from the private
sector and civil society.
Dr. Releford will speak about the successes as well as the challenges of doing business in
Africa and shed light on the unique opportunities for US based companies.
The benefits of this historic trade legislation has allowed Dr. Releford to create
“BUTTA”, the first urban clothing company to exclusively source all its garments from
Sub-Saharan Africa. “Butta was conceived out of my desire to combine consciousness
with style, quality, and street credibility, with garments made in worker-friendly
environments in countries such as Ghana, Uganda, Ethiopia, Kenya, Cameroon, Nigeria,
Gabon, Benin, Mali, Niger and Madagascar,” Dr. Releford explains. “Although the
African continent faces numerous challenges, trade, commerce and entrepreneurship will
prove to be more effective than grants and aid. BUTTA is an acronym for “ Bringing U
The Treasures of Africa”.
The theme of the 2007 AGOA Forum is “As Trade Grows, Africa Prospers: Optimizing
the Benefits Under AGOA.” “Manufacturing in Sub-Saharan Africa has proven to be a necessary and viable alternative to manufacturing in China and other Pacific Rim countries. Because of the
historic African Growth and Opportunities Act, we can be competitive with other regions
of the world and create jobs in the various countries where we are based. Additionally,
we have been able to successfully use our Sub Saharan Manufacturing alliance to secure
sourcing orders for major U.S. retailers, which has created jobs both in Africa as well as
the U.S.,” Dr. Releford notes.
