DETAILS: The Vacaville Christian High School Radio Symphony will perform the first full-length live performance of Gottfried Huppert’s magnificent score to Fritz Lang’s mega-classic movie, “Metropolis.” The students will perform its restored score with the actual movie at Brenden Theatres in Vacaville as it was premiered in 1927 Berlin, on August 1st and 2nd at 7pm.
THE FILM: Considered by experts to be the most influential silent film in history, “Metropolis” was a stunning achievement at a time when movies were pure invention. Even today, 80 years later, movie makers marvel at the impressive special effects without the aid of green or blue screening or computers. Fritz Lang’s 1927 masterpiece was unusual in many respects. It was produced with a huge budget of over $200,000,000 in today’s money. It was the first feature length science fiction movie. It was one of the few silent films with a full orchestra score written to be performed live in sync with the action on the screen.
THE SCORE: When preparation is finished, Huppert’s original 1927 score to Metropolis will total just over two hours in length! Simultaneous scenes will force the musicians to turn on a dime from sincere love, to action packed drama, to fear, to confident power and back again as the movie warrants.
-more-
All of this will need to be done in perfect sync with the screen. The movie won’t slow down and wait for the orchestra to lock in. In fact, Metropolis will depend on the orchestra’s timing to heighten the suspense and give great emotion from start to finish.
