July 27, 2007 (Press Release) --
The hype that iPhone generated months before its release and which continues to drive subscribers to AT&T, has also improved the wireless music cell phone sales of the wireless carrier and provided a boost to AT&T's cellular business. Furthemore, the free publicity generated by iPhone popularity has increased sales of many other mp3 capable mobile devices as well — most of which come with a substantially smaller price tag than the iPhone.
Studies show that although iPhone may appeal to the trendy types, most mobile users still are preferential to the more standard cell phone look and feel — and price. Indeed, the focus that the iPhone has placed on music capable cell phones has increased the sales of such devices across the board, but particularly for AT&T Wireless devices.
"In the buildup to the iPhone release, and particularly since then, our AT&T sales have increased some 54%," said Sam Michelson, CEO of online cell phone store, YouNeverCall. "Music phone sales have taken off, particularly Cingular (News - Alert) phones, which, of course, are now AT&T Wireless."
Michelson confirmed that of late, the most requested feature on cell phones us an mp3 player, and mobile device manufacturers are meeting that need. "Even Blackberries play mp3s," he added.
Despite the increase in mp3 phones popularity and, in particular, the iPhone, a YouNeveCall study suggests that long-term purchasing trends are not likely to be affected by these new devices. While users like being able to listen to music on their cell phones at times, their primary use will remain calling, which the dominant devices for enjoying music will still be standalone mp3 players.
