July 27, 2007 (Press Release) --
Ever wonder about your dog's manners? You can test your pup's social skills and help the Jeff Davis County Humane Society on August 4 at the Fort Davis Flea Market.
Kathie Compton will be administering the American Kennel Club's "Canine Good Citizen" test to 25 dogs from 9 am to 2 pm behind the Humane Society's booth at the "Flea Market".
By participating, owners will help the Humane society care for homeless dogs. Proceeds from the test, which will cost $15 per dog, will go towards a new kennel washing system and other needed supplies.
"The reason that I volunteer for JDCHS is to make the public more aware of them," she said. "They do so much to promote the human-animal bond and promote responsible dog ownership. They are on the cutting edge of animal sheltering concepts."
Compton said dogs will have to perform 10 tasks, such as sitting politely, coming when called and accepting a friendly stranger. If dogs have trouble with any part of the test, Compton will advise owners on how to improve their pet's behavior.
"People have fun with their dogs", Compton said. "It gives them a little taste of what it's like to be in an AKC obedience trial, but without the pressure.
Owners interested in training their pet to be a service or therapy dog may be particularly interested in this test, which is a prerequisite for many therapy and service animal certification programs, she said.
Compton conducted the tests a few years ago and successfully raised money for the Fort Davis humane society.
Owners can register at the event and should bring dogs with a regular collar and leash. Dogs must have current vaccinations. Dogs that pass the tests will receive a Canine Good Citizen certificate and collar tag.
