Huntington Beach, CA – July 30, 2007 – Positive Resistance is testing a hypothesis that no overhead will optimize donations. This volunteer nonprofit organization boasts a rare quotient: one hundred percent of donated funds are used to support programs for the foster population it serves. When facing recent challenges in meeting a forty thousand dollar budget requirement for an unprecedented program which would send ten deserving emancipated foster youth to study art in Paris, France, the director devised an inspirational algorithm and took it to the web.
“My task is to create win-win situations for foster children without having the luxury of delegating the necessary work to a paid staff.” Keariene Muizz assesses. “When I presented our business plan to our pro-bono attorney’s David Collins and Keith Nagayama, many years ago, I decided to forfeit taking a salary and opted to donate my intellectual property to Positive Resistance. The mathematically astute part of me couldn’t justify having to spend twenty five thousand dollars on meeting space for one evening in order to court wealthy donors; so I created a shrewd organization the everyday person could entrust their dollars to.”
In fact, the FOSTER HOPE: Start Small YouTube-A-Thon is about that very concept –donating a single dollar. With the success of online fundraising for political elections and the millions who view viral video campaigns, Ms. Muizz set out to recruit her A-Team of volunteer professionals. “Employing volunteers was a great way to pinpoint passionate individuals who are looking for an existence that lies beyond corporate burnout and truly want to use their skills to be a part of something influential. Additionally, a majority of foster children see that most of the people in their lives are paid to be there so it is also extremely important that they know that there are community members who care enough about their circumstances to guide a youth at-risk even in the absence of monetary gain.”
For over six years Positive Resistance has been working rightly so. Today, they celebrate a small victory in hope that America is ready to see the diversity, resilience, strength and idealism of those protecting and growing the foster community.
