United States of America (Press Release) August 4, 2007 --
You may ask yourself if all these drugs are necessary. The fact is, nearly 50% of the U.S. population has used a prescription in the last 30 days. The fact the we are sick is not so obvious everywhere. What is obvious is that prescription drug companies have become a pillar to our great country. Without their drugs, how would we go on? You may even ask yourself how we made it this far without them. Of course, many people speculate that life would be much more difficult without them. If we look at history, we can see that this is not the case. Natural substances, that may be considered illegal now, were once used to treat many of the common problems we associate with the most common prescriptions. This is especially true for what many psychiatrists label as "psychotic disorders" that require treatment with psychoactive drugs. This allows major medical research companies to come to the public for "funding" and contributions. How can the people say no to a possible cure for a disease as devastating as say cancer or AIDS? Many people would speculate that much of the money Americans contribute to these "non-profit" groups and organizations may actually go into researching much more questionable drugs. Drugs that many people would not call necessity, but get played out in nationwide TV and magazine ads as life changing dramas.
Touting their medications and miracles, prescription companies have recently taken on some risky ventures. We have to wonder if it is really ethical for the drug companies to market products that are not properly time tested. Some estimates for pharmaceutical industry advertising expenses are upwards of 2 billion dollars. With that type of budget, you can bet these private investors want to see a return and sometimes it means a sacrifice in ethics. In these cases, you can be assured that there will be many "leeches" of the system of business. Not only will private groups then be lobbying government officials (specifically FDA and EPA), but also they will be well embedded with the doctors.
