United States of America (Press Release) August 10, 2007 --
Denver, CO – Erik Albrechtson, regional director of the Colorado Taekwondo Institute, announced that students at the school are preparing for the new school year with lessons in awareness, as the first line of self-defense.
“Contrary to popular myth, martial arts self-defense training does not teach students to instigate a fight or to use physical self-defense techniques first,” said Albrechtson. “In fact, most martial artists, even young students, are never required to defend themselves, physically, because they have the skills and self-discipline to avoid confrontations before they reach the level of fighting.”
Albrechtson explained further that it almost seems natural for children to be a bit unfocused at times, to be almost too involved with their friends or activities and not sufficiently aware of their surroundings. It is very important, therefore, that children learn how to be alert, aware and avoid confrontations with bullies or would-be child abductors.
“As much as we want our students to have the skills to fight or escape an attacker, if necessary, we prefer that they can assess a situation well before it becomes a personal safety incident,” said Albrechtson. “Confidence, discipline, concentration and self-control are much better self-defense techniques than kicking and striking. Children who look confident are less likely to become the targets of bullies. Just by their very nature, bullies must find victims who look easy to attack.”
Albrechtson added that this type of comprehensive self-defense training helps children to find their focus, to concentrate their attention on their surroundings, to be aware of escape routes, the nearest safe retreat and the closest adult from which to ask for help. Children, with these skills, are less hesitant to report bullies and other dangerous situations.
The Colorado Taekwondo Institute was founded in 1983, and has been a pioneer in educational martial arts in the area. They take a positive, structured approach to educating students of all ages. There are four campuses in the metro area, including: Green Mountain, Littleton, Westminster and Golden.
