Good Mews Animal Foundation, a non-profit, no-kill cage free animal shelter, voted one of the Best Places to Adopt a Pet by the readers of Atlanta Magazine, has rescued fifteen of over 50 Persian cats confiscated from an unlicensed breeder in Jefferson, Georgia.

As described by Shannon Crafton, Shelter Manager, “Their fur was heavily matted and once shaved, we discovered painful skin lesions. Many also have Ringworm and/or upper respiratory infections, and none of them were spayed or neutered. The woman was reportedly charging up to $2,000 for a cat.”

Dana Widmer, Assistant Shelter Manager added “This rescue is definitely

a huge undertaking but we are fortunate we were able to help so none of the rescued cats had to be euthanized. Persians are generally a laid back, affectionate breed and these cats are no exception despite coming from horrific living conditions.”

Their road to recovery will take time and money. Those wishing to make a donation, monitor the cats’ progress, volunteer or learn more about the shelter can visit Good Mews at www.goodmews.org or call 770-499-CATS (2287)

Good Mews is located at 736 Johnson Ferry Road, Suite A-3, Marietta, in the Fountains at Olde Towne Center just North of Lower Roswell Road. Adoption hours at the shelter are Saturdays from 10am-4pm, the 1st & 3rd Sunday of each month from 1pm-4pm or weekdays by appointment only. Adoptions

are also conducted at Pawsibilities, www.pawsroswell.com the 4th Sunday of the month from 10AM-4PM and at the Merchants Walk PetsMart the 3rd Saturday of the month from 10AM-4PM.

Good Mews offers an alternative to traditional animal shelters in the Metro Atlanta area by providing a no-kill, cage-free haven for homeless, abused, or abandoned cats until placing them in permanent, loving homes. Good Mews promotes public awareness regarding the value of pets, animal welfare, pet overpopulation, and quality human-animal companionship through education and outreach programs.

Good Mews is one of the few virtually cage-free, no-kill cat shelters in the State of Georgia. Since 1990, Good Mews has placed approximately 5,000 cats in permanent homes. The shelter receives no government support, relying solely on donations of time, service and money from its supporters, the public and area businesses. Good Mews is home to approximately 100 residents at any given time, most of whom live at the shelter; some also reside in foster care. We have an average adoption rate of approximately 5 cats per week.
