Australia, Commonwealth of (Press Release) August 16, 2007 --
Sydney based puppet troupe, “The Grandan Puppets” will give 18 performances at the prestigious Kyong Ju Expo in South Korea next month.
Grandan’s puppeteer, Daniel Jarrett says “The invitation to perform there has been one of the most challenging projects we have ever done because the show had to be devised to be able to cross the language barrier- in other words, a show with no words. It also had to have appeal to all ages. It took us some time to finalise the concept but I think and hope we’ve achieved it.”
Jarrett shies away from being called a “puppeteer.” He says it’s more accurate to call him an entertainer who uses puppets, and it takes only a cursory look at the puppets to see that they are very different. Each marionette is a metre high and weighs so much, they are hung from a rig slung around his neck to allow him to use both hands to control the puppet.
“With this act I’ve got no stage to hide behind” he says- “I’m out there onstage interacting with the puppets in full view of the audience. We’ve called the show Hi Jinx, because it’s basically a mixture of the funny, beautiful, weird and classical – so it’s very different. It just goes to prove, there are many forms of puppets and you can do almost anything with them. Little wonder that lately there has been renewed interest in this art form right around the world”.
The Kyong Ju Expo is an annual event in South Korea and features selected acts and entertainers from around the world.
