Indianapolis, Indiana – “Why Sturgis?” makes its Indianapolis screening premiere at the IMAX Theater Indiana State Museum on Saturday, August 25th at 8:20 pm.
Come see the Indiana-produced documentary about the history and economy of Sturgis, South Dakota . . . projected on a screen almost the size of Mount Rushmore! Filmmakers Martin Schliessmann and John Brune will be present for the showing.
The 67th Annual Sturgis Rally is now over for this year. 7,000 residents of this small Black Hills town hosted over 500,000 bikers during this August. But for one night, South Dakota is coming to Indiana!
“Why Sturgis?” is a feature-length documentary created and distributed by Indiana-based Escape Route Flix, LLC. The movie offers an entertaining and informative overview of the famous Sturgis Rally, and much more. Historians, motorcyclists and travel buffs will find fascinating a detailed history of the town and surrounding communities, ties to the National Anthem and an overview of South Dakota tourism – all covered within the film’s 89-minute running time.
A major part of the movie includes the first biography of town's namesake Col. Samuel D. Sturgis (a Civil War General and full Colonel of the 7th Cavalry at the time of Little Bighorn). Most people know of Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer, but did you know Sturgis was his boss?
The heart of the documentary includes one of the last interviews with the late Pearl Hoel: known as “The First Lady of Sturgis” and rally co-founder in 1938.
Filmed, researched, and edited between 2001 and 2005, “Why Sturgis?” marks the first completed project by Escape Route Flix. “A challenge was to tie-in the past history with today’s culture; one that eventually showcases the economical impact that a small community has with the entire nation,” said Schliessmann. “We show a different view of Sturgis that most media overlooks.”
“The final documentary was introduced on Sturgis’ Main Street at the 2005 rally,” Schliessmann continues. “As a native of Indianapolis, I am proud to finally showcase this on the state’s largest movie screen in my old hometown.”
Martin Schliessmann is an advertising and marketing consultant and currently lives in Mishawaka, IN. John Brune is an Emmy-award winning video producer, and lives in Fort Wayne, IN. For more information about “Why Sturgis?” and Escape Route Flix, LLC, please visit www.WhySturgis.com.
