The winners of the April Baltimore "Uplifting Minds II" talent competition Music, Song Writing and Dance Awards recently performed at the July 6-8, 2007 African-American Heritage Festival. The festival is the city's largest gathering attracting an average of 500,000. It was held at the M & T Bank Stadium on lots B & C, admission was free.
Celebrity performers included The Temptations Revue featuring Dennis Edwards and Ali Woods, Charlie Wilson, Musiq Soul Child and Patti LaBelle. "Uplifting Minds II" winners 20-one year-old rapper Beast (grand prize music); 21 year-old rappers Young Charmers (grand prize song writing); 19 year-old Destiny Adams (grand prize in dance); 11 year-old R&B singer Neenah Taylor (music runner-up), and 20 year-old vulcha/rapper V.I.P. (runner-up in song writing) were opening acts.
The last Baltimore "Uplifting Minds II" entertainment conference (entertainment seminars and talent competition showcase) of the year was August 18th-19th for the entertainment seminars held at The Baltimore Times offices from 1 - 7 p.m. and ended the next day with the national talent competition showcase (music/vocal and song writing) at Coppin State University in the Tawes Center Ballroom from 1 p.m. - 3 p.m.
Seminar topics included "radio, the new era" by Internet radio owner Tyron Moore (Sharp Eye Entertainment); "song writing techniques" by platinum song writers/producers The Featherstone Brothers (Roundtable Productions); "the psychology of entertainment" by Jamie Ballard, Ph.D., "casting call strategies" by model/actress Kerri Hobbs, and "promotions and public relations strategies" by entertainment columnist/promotions expert Eunice Moseley
Competitors came to showcase before a panel of judges that give advice and in some cases, like the African-American Heritage Festival, open doors.
The showcase was hosted by Doresa Harvey (Heaven 600) with sound provided by the official DJ for the east coast conference tour DJ-Fatman (www.dj-fatman.com).
