He is a former assistant professor at Rush Medical School where he did early research on similarities Of male sleep apnea patients to female TMJoint disorder patient in the 1980's and treated patients in the 1990's until 2001. He is the founder of I HATE CPAP.com, the dental editor of Sleep and Health Journal. In addition to several recent publications Dr Shapira teaches dentists from around the USA how to successfully treat sleap apnea with dental appliances and work with physician sleep specialists to ensure that patients who do not tolerate CPAP get the best available treatment.

Dr Shapira is a Charter member of the Sleep Disorder Dental Society which became the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine, he is credentialed by that academy and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine, Founding member of DOSA, the Dental organization for Sleep Apnea, A Diplomat of the Academy of Pain Management, and a Fellow and former International Regent of the ICCMO,the international college of cranio mandibular orthopedics.
