THE GREAT STACHE OFF UNIFIES MEN IN THE BATTLE AGAINST TESTICULAR CANCER
PHOENIX – August 30, 2007 – In an effort to increase awareness and stimulate research for testicular cancer, the #1 ranked cancer in men ages 15 to 35, three Phoenix, Arizona men have rallied together to create The Great Stache Off, a mustache growing contest. According to Jonathan Heinl, Jeff Dempsey and Dana Witt, contest organizers and participants, their aim is to raise thousands for research with all funds going to the Sean Kimerling Testicular Cancer Foundation.
“People may wonder, why moustaches?” Dempsey stated. “It’s quite simple, really,” he says. “It takes balls to grow a mustache!” That’s the philosophy behind growing mustaches to raise funds for the foundation that will go towards testicular cancer awareness and research. In the past, Dempsey says, very little research has been done to find the cure, much less increase awareness about this grave threat to manhood. In 2007 alone, there were approximately 7,920 new cases of testicular cancer in the United States, and almost 400 deaths stemming from the disease.
The Great Stache Off is open to anyone willing to “get growing” beginning Saturday, September 1, 2007 and ending two months later on October 31, 2007. All participants are required submit a $20 entrance fee donation to the fund to sign-up, must shave all facial hair on the first day of the competition, and are required to remain clean-shaven except for their stache area for the duration of the contest.
Participants are encouraged to find sponsors for the event who can donate to the fund on the contestant’s behalf, and those who wish to remain “stache-less” may also donate funds directly to the cause. The contest winner will be the individual who raises the most funds for the foundation and will receive a customized trophy, bragging rights, and perhaps copious support from female enthusiasts.
