United States of America (Press Release) September 4, 2007 --
The John R. Oishei Foundation has awarded the P2 Collaborative of Western New York, Inc. a grant in the amount of $335,000 over a three-year period. The grant will assist the organization in its mission to increase consumer engagement in improving healthcare.
The P2 Collaborative of Western New York, Inc. is working to develop alignment around established quality indicators related to growing community health concerns, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, asthma, cancer and depression. Creating stronger information exchange between the healthcare providers and the patient will lead to improved compliance through education and active participation in one’s health. Other guiding principles include engaging communities to promote healthy lifestyles, sharing health status data with communities to foster awareness and action and creating open exchanges of best practices among healthcare providers.
The project will start with establishing a widely accepted framework for promoting lay understanding of how consumers can act to improve quality. “Research has shown that when people do not understand quality, they tend to view it as less important. A structured focus group process called “concept mapping” will be used to develop consensus on the framework across all community stakeholder groups, “ stated Shelley Hirshberg, executive director of the P2 Collaborative of Western New York, Inc.
