(38 Years Later and) The Woodstock Generation is still Getting Stoned

A featured article in the current edition of “Let Life In” called “Boomers Getting Stoned,” explores the attitudes of Boomers today that contribute to, what can be considered a drug crisis.

Gary Geyer, editor-in-chief of “Let life In,” says the peak of drug use among youth in the United States occurred not in 1969 (Woodstock) but in the late 1970s –when the so-called “Woodstock Generation” was getting older.
“It appears now that those ‘kids’ brought the weed with them into the new century,” says Geyer. “Today, many boomers who learned to "turn on, tune in and drop out" as teenagers, are fueling a rise in illicit drug use among 50- to 59-year-olds. Apparently, they are still carrying with them their "far out" attitudes from the 60's and 70's,” adds Geyer

Statistics show that marijuana is by far their drug of choice, accounting for 70% of the boomers’ illegal drug use. And according to The Scripps Howard News Service, a growing number of boomers are showing up at drug abuse treatment centers. The median age of overdose deaths is rising as well.
In fact, boomers accounted for about half of all people nationwide who died of drug-related causes according to a recent report. “That is way out of proportion to the rest of the population,” says Geyer. And that does not include impaired driving or other accidental causes indirectly related to drug use.
“Ironically,” says Geyer, “it has been exactly the opposite for young teens, the children and grandchildren of boomers. Illicit drug use for that age group has been consistently decreasing.”
