The popularity of Webcam Flix can partly be attributed to favourable reviews from PC Plus magazine and Columbia Tribune, as well as being recommended as a tool of choice for participants in animation festivals such as Young MotionPlymouth. The cost of webcams has also gone down in recent years, making them more affordable and widespread amongst computer users, particularly those keen on using them for internet chat programs such as Yahoo Messenger and Voice Over IP (VOIP) applications such as Skype.
"Users have been very creative in the videos they create," says author David Butler. "I've been sent links on YouTube to time lapse subjects like construction sites and storm clouds One customer even sent me a video of snails seemingly playing with each other and another condensed his journey across America into less than quarter of an hour."
Butler is currently working on promoting the software to schools, in particular for biology and physics labs. For example, how mold grows on agar jelly, or how plants react to sunlight could easily be recorded using Webcam Flix, then shown in classes or used for science coursework.
